Air source heat pumps provide efficient and reliable low-carbon home heating, but they're still uncommon in most of the UK. Most people have never seen a heat pump. For those considering one, it’s difficult to find out how it might work in their home. Visiting a heat pump and talking to people who live with one can be a highly valuable step for people who are considering switching to low-carbon heat.
Patricia invites you to visit her heat pump, in a 1997 build detached property in Petersfield, which was previously heated by a 25-year old, E-rated gas boiler. As the boiler was coming to the end of life, they investigated installing a heat pump. The house had adequate cavity wall and loft insulation and was double-glazed throughout, so there was no major work to be done to be ready for a heat pump.
Their Midea 10kW heat pump was installed in August 2023, which took four days. The majority of radiators were upgraded to double-thickness / larger surface area radiators. A larger hot water cylinder was installed.
They use the "Homely" app to control the heat pump - just set the required temperature and time of day, along with the electricity tariff, and it works out when the heat pump should run. They tend to keep their house at 18 degrees between 7am and 11pm.
An initial analysis of their gas and electricity bills for the first year indicate that they saved 70% of the energy (kWh) used to power the house, and it cost less to heat the home to the same level as before.
