In collaboration with Bedales, PeCAN are hosting a screening of the film ‘Six Inches of Soil'.
The film tells the inspiring story of British farmers standing up against the industrial food system and transforming the way they produce food – to heal the soil, benefit our health and provide for local communities.
It will be screened in Bedales theatre and followed by a discussion and Q&A session with a panel of local experts. The event will run from 18.30 – 21.30 on Tuesday 28th January (doors open at 18:30, and the film screening starts at 19:00, with panel discussion after the film).
Tickets are just £5 each, but students go FREE. This covers the cost of screening the film, with anything remaining going towards future events organised by PeCAN.
The panel will include:
William Benson, founder of Seedleaves at Applegarth Farm
Seedleaves are redefining the future of farming, on the Surrey-Hampshire border in Grayshott. By harnessing the power of vertical farming and advanced agricultural technologies, they have revolutionised the way they grow food. Their approach maximises space efficiency and minimises environmental impact, and they collaborate with leading providers to offer bespoke farming plans. They are passionate about sustainability and proud to be pioneers in modern agriculture.
Albert Hess, arable manager at Rotherfield Farms
Rotherfield Farms use regenerative farming principles over an area of 800 hectares, which includes all the forage requirements for their 400 dairy cows. The farm is part of the Selborne Landscape Partnership (SLP), a cluster of 27 farmers and conservationists restoring nature across the countryside that was home to Gilbert White, pioneering ecologist. Since 2014 SLP members have been improving habitats to establish wildlife corridors on a bigger, more joined-up landscape scale.
Peter Moss, CEO of Downforce Technologies
Downforce Technologies provides science-based intelligence on soil health, soil organic carbon levels and biodiversity – data that is used to support sustainable land management practices. Soil erosion not only threatens food security but also exacerbates climate change by releasing carbon into the atmosphere. With over 30% of the world's soil already degraded, being able to measure soil health accurately at scale is key to addressing this pressing global challenge.
