As November turned to December and the autumn leaves displayed their beautiful colours before falling, we revelled in their magical display by hosting a seasonal art exhibition – ‘Land, Light and Leaves’.

The exhibition, in Petersfield's Winton House Centre, focused on paying tribute to our fragile landscape and allowed the 170 visitors who came through the door to embark on a journey through all four seasons.

The Café was transformed, with autumnal trees and their leaves dominating the theme. The artwork gently turned to winter in the same room, and then sprung into spring and summer in the Courtyard Room.  A years’ worth of nature’s stunning seasonal displays was achieved in a short walk around two rooms!

Looking at paintings and photography featuring our local countryside, mainly in the South Downs, visitors saw  our delicate seasons through the artists’ eyes, and enjoyed thought-provoking poetry displayed alongside.

Artwork was available to buy, and the exhibiting artists Abigail McKern, Lynne Ashcroft, Frances Vesey and Rebecca Finch were thrilled with the response to their work. Visitors referred to it as a moving and touching exhibition, and many left with a piece of art to reflect upon and enjoy.

The artists hope that their work serves as a reminder that ‘nature is not only awesome in beauty but resilient in the face of human activity. It is humans who will need to change to avoid self inflicted, devastating consequences.’

Accompanying facts and figures were displayed to demonstrate how climate change is impacting our seasons, how this affects the natural world, and ultimately the way we must adapt to live in future.

PeCAN representatives were on hand to talk through PeCAN’s work, objectives and commitment to helping the community adapt to the changes in our weather and ultimately move towards net zero.

A weekend PeCAN Eco Café provided some seasonal refreshments throughout and visitors enjoyed a chance to sit and talk about the subjects on display.

Winton House also hosts the regular weekly Petersfield Eco Café on a Tuesday morning in the Courtyard Room, with everyone welcome to come along for refreshments and to talk through their concerns. There are many positive projects that the local community are involved in, which you might like to hear about and maybe become part of. If you are working on your own climate initiative, please do come along and tell us about it.

It is hoped that the Land, Light and Leaves exhibition has raised awareness of both the climate crisis and positive response currently underway in Petersfield and the surrounding area.
